In this exclusive interview, we get the inside scoop on Richard Oversmith's inspiration from visiting Wilmington, what he's most excited about at the Vino & Vision event and his favorite place in the world to paint.

After a hiatus of nearly 15 years, the American impressionist and illustrious 'En plein air' painter, Richard Oversmith, is set to make a grand return to the East Coast. His highly anticipated exhibition at the Vino & Vision event this September is a moment of great excitement for him. He eagerly anticipates the better weather this time, as he immerses himself in the elements of a scene while painting. His previous weeklong plein air painting event in Wilmington was cut short (on day two) due to an offshore hurricane, resulting in a collection of 'grey' paintings. This time, he looks forward to a more vibrant palette.

As a Western North Carolinian, is there anything you hope to get inspiration from while visiting this coastal city?

As a resident of Western North Carolina, I paint a lot of local mountain scenes. When I travel, I pick places that are different in subject than where I'm from. I mostly look for water when down at the coast, like Wilmington. I love painting the ins and outs of water. The reflection of the sky in the water speaks to me. It will be a short visit during the show, but I always hope to sneak in some plein air painting.

What are you most excited about at the Vino & Vision event?

One of the aspects that excites me the most about the Vino & Vision event is the opportunity to see the work of the other two artists. Since the beginning of my representational art career, I've admired Jove Wang's work in magazines. To see it in person is something I greatly look forward to. And then there's Dan Beck, whose beautifully created figure pieces are a delight to behold. Of course, the wine is also a part of the excitement.

Speaking of wine, there will be award-winning vineyards and wineries at the event. What kind of wine would you say pairs best with your art if you had to choose?

My wife and I travel a lot, and we like to visit a vineyard or two when we are away. Some of these places are known for their wines. We went to Puglia, Italy, for a couple of weeks in 2022. I really fell in love with the local wine from there, Primitivo, which is a tasty red Zinfandel grape. The rich and warm tones in my paintings pair well with all the wines, except maybe boxed wine.

Where is your favourite place to paint?

Having painted in 16 different countries, I have found my heart always returning to France. It's the birthplace of Impressionism, a style that resonates deeply with me. The thought of returning to France in June 2025 for a week of teaching in the Loire Valley, surrounded by the beauty of the countryside, fills me with joy and anticipation. It's not just about the teaching, but also about the fun, sun, and, of course, more painting in that beautiful countryside.

The Vino & Vision event & exhibition will take place on September 21st at the historic Live Oaks Estate. Ticket to the event can be purchased HERE.
