In an exclusive interview, Jove discusses his recent workshop in Europe, his feelings about coming to Wilmington to paint and exhibit with fellow impressionist and featured artist Dan Beck, and his wine collection.

An artistic journey knows no bounds. For Jove Wang, this adage couldn't ring more true. From apprenticing under master painter Gang Gu at the age of 7 in China to immigrating to the United States, and garnering national recognition, to being commissioned to paint a portrait of a Cardinal in Rome to organizing a 20-person artist workshop in Spain & Portugal, Jove's boundless journey finds him in Wilmington, NC for the first time to showcase his art at the Vino & Vision event.
Tell me about your recent workshop in Europe. What inspired this trip?
In May 2024, I organized 20 artists and students to go to Spain and Portugal for a plein air workshop. These two countries have always been places I yearn to go to paint. Spain has produced an artist that I appreciate—Sorolla. His museum is located in the heart of Madrid. I took the students to visit the museum and explained Sorolla's art this time. His works have a unique artistic charm and characteristics of Spanish culture. The sunshine and colors there is also my favorite.
How do you feel about exhibiting with Dan Beck for the first time?
I have known my friend Dan Beck for many years. I admire his spiritual and mysterious work. Dan's wife, Leping, and I are both from Beijing. I am really looking forward to the exhibition of the three artists in this beautiful eastern seaside city.
What are your thoughts on coming to Wilmington, NC?
It's my first time coming to this East Coast city to paint and exhibit with two wonderful artists. The ancient buildings along the streets and the cultural customs of the streets definitely give me a fresh feeling and space for imagination. There must be a big difference from Los Angeles on the western coast, such as construction, scenery, and lifestyle. I'm also looking forward to doing a painting workshop here in Wilmington for two days.
There will be award-winning vineyards & wineries at the event. What is your favorite wine? If you had to choose, what type of wine would you say pairs best with your art?
I don't drink, but I like to collect wine, appreciate its cultural heritage, and share it with my friends. My favorite wine is Bordeaux, which symbolizes romance. I find it fascinating, charming, and exotic. I always endow my artwork with romanticism, expressionism, and modernism characteristics.
